Chris Harnett is a LEED AP and has a Master’s of Science degree in Environmental Management. Chris’ experience is in environmental consulting and he has several years experience working as a Project Manager and Green Building Consultant for a local construction company. Chris’ interest in architecture and design was first realized when he traveled in Europe shortly after college. He then spent time volunteering abroad with Habitat for Humanity and ultimately worked for an environmental consulting company. He is very passionate about educating and working with clients to develop their projects in the most environmentally- friendly manner possible.
Now more than ever before, the concept of sustainability is at the forefront of people’s minds. It has become more evident in recent years that the building industry is very strenuous on the environment. In the United States alone buildings account for 38% of all carbon dioxide emissions which contribute to global warming, 39% of our total energy usage, and 40% of all raw materials extracted from the environment (USGBC).
It is apparent that not only is sustainability essential for the environment and our own survival, but that it can be very beneficial for the economy. Green building is perceived by many to have higher costs for design and materials, but through innovation and sound decision making, costs can actually be comparable to traditional construction projects. Furthermore, the incorporation of green design concepts and materials in a project will actually lower operation and energy costs overtime as well as create a healthier building for its occupants.
Our goal is to work with your vision in mind, in a collaborative fashion to analyze where we can best incorporate sustainable practices into the design. We’ll take time to share with you how we can reduce the project’s impact on the environment, lower energy costs by making the building more efficient, and if your goal is to attain LEED certification we’ll lead the way. The methods for making a building more efficient can vary and will depend on the scope of the work. These methods can range from passive designs that improve light and ventilation to more complex methods such as the installation of renewable energy systems. Additionally, we aim to design spaces that are healthy for the occupants therefore we are diligent in specifying cost effective materials, paints, and sealants that are more environmentally-friendly.
There is a cross roads where being environmentally friendly and creating great designs meet. That is where we are standing and we would love for you to join us in creating your environmentally friendly or even LEED certified space.
